SAMPLE  COVER LETTERS

Being qualified for a particular job is only half the battle of getting it.  It is  to your advantage to state your qualifications in your cover letter.  This is the first impression a potential employer has of you and it should capture their attention.  Sample cover letters include these key points:

GETTING STARTED:

  •  Always use a cover letter even if it is not necessary.  This is your time to promote yourself above every other candidate applying for the same job.  The goal of a cover letter is to give you an edge on getting the interview.

  • Visit the company’s website and learn about them and the position available.  Adjust your cover letter to show how your skills would benefit their particular organization.

  • Your cover letter should not be more than 1 page and should consist of approximately three paragraphs.

  • Use a professional greeting.  Address the employer by their title (Mr./Mrs./Ms.).    Spelling the hiring manager’s name correctly is one of the most important parts of the cover letter!  If you don’t know the hiring manager’s name, contact the company to find out.  If it is not available, use a term such as Dear Hiring Manager.

STATE YOUR CASE:

  •  Write in a positive tone in a friendly, yet businesslike manner.

  •  In the first paragraph of your cover letter write about the position you are applying for.  Try something different than the usual “I am applying for...” Here is a sample cover letter opening:   “Based on my experience in the _______ field, I am a highly qualified candidate.  Please consider my resume for the _____ position.”

  • In the second paragraph state your strong interest in the position and WHY you are the ideal candidate for the job.  Highlight any duties you have done in the past that pertain to the position, mentioning the qualifications and job requirements stated in the ad.  Sell yourself!
  •  All writing should be clear and concise.  Don’t waste the interviewer’s time.  Do not add any unnecessary personal information.

  •  End your letter by thanking them for their time and asking for the opportunity to meet with them to discuss the position further.  Always  include your contact information.

MAKE A GREAT IMPRESSION:

  •  The appearance must be perfect.  Be sure to correct all typographical and grammatical errors.  Having someone else re-read your letter before you send it is the best way to catch any errors.

  •  Use professional paper (it should match your resume) and an appropriate type style.  Do not use font styles that make it difficult to read.

  •  Remember to personally SIGN your cover letter.

Take the time to write your own sample cover letters.  Get into the practice of selling yourself on paper.  When you are ready to apply for a particular job, all your resources will be at your fingertips.  Be sure to customize each cover letter for the position you are applying for.  It will be worth your time!
