Good Interview Techniques:  The Successful Interview

Before you go:

  • Research the company. Visit the company's website. Know their history and growth.
  • Re-read the job description so you can fit your background to their needs.
  • Rehearse sample interview questions.
  • Prepare questions to ask each interviewer that focus on responsibility issues. Don't get bogged down on the "What's in it for me?" questions.

Presenting Yourself:

  • Arrive 15 minutes early.
  • Dress in business attire. The less jewelry the better.
  • Bring extra copies of your resume and references.
  • Be personable as well as professional. Everyone you meet is evaluating you.
  • Know your resume. Be prepared to answer questions about your first job as if it were your current position.
  • All questions are asked for a good reason so answer accordingly.
  • If necessary, ask for clarification before answering a question. Be honest and formulate your answers before you speak.
Closing:
  • Be sure the interviewer has heard your interest in this position.
  • Ask if there are any concerns about your ability to do the job. If so, address those concerns.
  • As soon as you have finished the interview contact your recruiter. Your immediate feedback is critical at this juncture.
  • Be sure to send a "thank you" for the opportunity to interview with each person you met.
